IELTS WRITING TASK 2 - DOUBLE QUESTION SAMPLE (TECHNOLOGY)

Nowadays the way people interact with each other has changed because of technology.

In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people make? Has this become a positive or negative development?

WRITING TASK 2 - DOUBLE QUESTION ON PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

This is a tricky question because there are a few different elements to the first statement and then there are two separate questions. Here is how I tried to answer it:

Physical appearance may play an important role in many spheres of life: in the person’s success in school, in relationships with people, in the choice of a career path.

Say whether you agree or disagree with it, and if you see it as a positive or negative factor.

All questions below are from both the Academic and General Training papers in 2015
Of course, the same questions will not come up again, but it will give you a good idea about what types of questions to expect and also allow you to practice.

PROBLEM WITH QUESTION IDENTIFICATION IN WRITING TASK 2

A lot of you send me your Writing questions after you do your exam. Recently, there have been a few very confusing questions. One student even emailed me to say that he probably won’t do very well because he found it difficult to focus because one person was crying throughout most of the Writing test.

But don’t worry. The best thing to do in these situations is to analyse the questions, think about the best way to answer them and you will improve your technique. You should see these difficult questions as a chance to improve, not an excuse to give up.

IELTS ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1 APPROACH

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 requires you to write 150 words about data (in the form of a bar chart, line graph, pie chart or table), a process or map. This is a skill many students have not practiced before and don’t do so well as a result. The key to doing well in Writing Task 1 is knowing how your essay is marked and then using this information to give the examiners exactly what they want.

I advise my students to use a 5 step approach:
1. Understand the marking criteria
2. Paraphrase the question
3. Write an overview
4. Support overview with detail
5. Check your work

IELTS TASK 1 MULTIPLE GRAPHS

This post will help you answer task 1 questions that feature more than one graph.

A common question on the IELTS academic task 1 paper asks you to write about two different graphs. For example, in the question below we are asked to summarise both a pie chart and a table. You could also be given a line graph and a bar chart, a pie chart and a line graph or any other combination. Students normally score lower on these types of questions, not because they are more difficult, but because they are unfamiliar with this type of question.

IELTS WRITING TASK 1: PROCESS QUESTIONS

Introduction
In Part 1 of the IELTS Writing test you might be asked to describe a process. IELTS Task 1 process questions are not as common as charts or graphs, but they do come up occasionally. They are much easier to answer than the other Task 1 questions, but many people do not prepare for them at all. This is a big risk to take because it does not take long to familiarise yourself with these questions and learn how to answer them properly.

5 COMMON TASK 1 MISTAKES

Last month I launched our new writing correction service and after marking hundreds of Task 1 essays I noticed that most students make the same mistakes. Below are the 5 most common mistakes and how you can fix them and improve your writing.

THE DANGER OF SYNONYMS

Introduction
Synonyms - are different words that have exactly the same or nearly the same meaning, such as male and man or third-level education and university.

Lots of IELTS teachers, myself included, stress the importance of using synonyms in your writing. Synonyms help us to vary our language and show the examiner that we have a wide-ranging vocabulary. However, synonyms are also very dangerous because if used incorrectly, it can not only lower your mark for vocabulary, but also for task response, and coherence.

This article will look at some real essays that used synonyms incorrectly to show you how dangerous they can be.

IELTS WRITING TASK 1 TIPS

Here are some examiner-approved task 1 tips for you.

At the school I work in they run an IELTS academic writing course. I love teaching this course because the students are really hardworking and I get to really help them with their IELTS writing tasks 1 and 2. What really surprises me every course is just how many simple mistakes students make when they start the course. The great thing about this is all of their mistakes can be easily fixed.

With this in mind, I asked the students to write a list of Dos and Don’ts for IELTS writing task 1. This really helped them focus on their mistakes and consolidate what they had learned.
